SMUT VISIONS NYC

Smut Visions NYC was a passion project started in 2023.

The idea was simple: take a notebook everywhere and ask everyone to draw their idea of SMUT. No digital submissions were accepted, all drawings were done in person.

Over 500 New Yorkers, along with a few tourists, provided illustrations. People from all walks of life contributed.

Participants were encouraged to draw whatever came to mind. The only rules were: it needed to be dirty, one drawing per person, no do-overs, and colors were limited to black, pink, and/or yellow.

The first time someone was asked to draw smut, the answer was unequivocally "no". It took some convincing. As the pages slowly filled with illustrations, it became easier to get a yes. People saw the range of skill levels (from stick figure to detailed anatomy) and felt comfortable joining in.

This project cultivated a real-world experience that fostered genuine connections. It became a bridge between public and private, allowing others to see sexually themed art from strangers, giving them permission to contribute their own. It started with an empty notebook, and ended with layers of drawings. With the pages finally filled, the project's importance became clear; by discussing and creating erotic art openly, it revealed a collective erotic consciousness.

The printed version of Smut Visions NYC is a curated selection of ideas, styles, genres, and techniques. Featuring contributions from well-known names, including Richard Kern, Mike Diana, Eartheater, Cumgirl8, Olivier Zahm, Heather Benjamin, and Clayton Patterson.

The book debuted at the Erotic Art Fair, accompanied by an exhibition to celebrate its release; it presented the project in its entirety, including photographs we took of people as they drew and the stories behind the illustrations.
